Introduction
The REAL Project Fund is a targeted, competitive grant opportunity that will support the delivery of small-scale, community-led, innovative projects. These projects will aim to build pathways to stable and culturally safe employment opportunities for First Nations people who have been in the justice system. The projects may seek to improve access to employment opportunities for First Nations people by addressing structural and social factors - such as workplace inclusion, cultural safety and community informed pathways.
The REAL Project Fund will be flexible to allow for innovative solutions. Projects may include working in partnership with employers to provide paid work experience and mentoring activities (like career planning) to address non-vocational barriers to employment.
Applications will only be accepted from Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs), other First Nations organisations and joint consortia that are led by First Nations organisations.
Consultation
The department has been engaging with a wide range of stakeholders to guide the design of the REAL Project Fund. Now it is seeking public feedback on the draft Grant Opportunity Guidelines for this future grant opportunity.
The draft Grant Opportunity Guidelines outline the eligibility criteria for both participants and activities under the REAL Project Fund, as well as the assessment criteria and application process. The department welcomes feedback on any aspects of the draft Grant Opportunity Guidelines to ensure the objectives of the REAL Project Fund are met.
We want to hear from all stakeholders, including First Nations people with lived experience of the justice system, ACCOs, employment services providers and peak bodies and any other individuals interested in improving how First Nations people transition from the justice system.
The grant opportunity is expected to open for applications in the second half of 2025, following this consultation period, and will be administered in accordance with the Commonwealth Grants Rules and Principles 2024 (CGRPs).
